The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is the singular gateway for pursuing an MBBS degree in India. However, simply passing the exam is not enough; candidates must successfully navigate the complex counseling process to secure a seat.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) conducts the centralized online counseling. This counseling is specifically for 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government colleges across all states, and 100% seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities (like DU, AMU, BHU), ESIC, and AFMC.
Scope of MCC NEET UG Counseling
15% AIQ Seats
Covers 15% of government medical college seats across all Indian states, open to all qualified candidates regardless of their state domicile.
Deemed Universities
100% management and NRI quota seats in Deemed Universities across India are filled exclusively through MCC counseling.
Central Institutions
Includes 100% seats for BHU, AMU, JMI, and institutional quota seats of Central Institutes like Safdarjung and RML.
Phases of NEET UG Counseling
Round 1
The initial round of counseling where candidates register, pay the fee, and fill choices. Seats are allotted based on merit and preferences. Free exit is usually permitted in this round.
Round 2
Candidates who did not get a seat, or those who want to upgrade their Round 1 seat, participate here. New registrations are allowed. Security deposit forfeiture rules apply if a seat is allotted but not joined.
Mop-Up Round (Round 3)
Conducted to fill remaining vacant seats in AIQ and Deemed Universities after Round 2. Fresh registration is allowed for candidates who haven't secured any seat so far.
Stray Vacancy Round
The final round to fill any leftover seats. Usually, no fresh registrations or choice filling is allowed here; seats are allotted based on choices submitted in the mop-up round.
